Golden Hinde, 1579




In 1579, Sir Francis Drake sailed his ship, the Golden Hinde, from England in search of treasure for Queen Elizabeth. The Sleek ship sailed around the tip of South America .... The Golden Hinde was not only one of the first ships to sail around the world, it was truly a Treasure Ship.  ...more images.

Duncan & Co., Port Glasgow for San Francisco Shipping Co., and rigged with royal sails over double top and topgallant sails.  The vessel was sold several times in San Francisco, Broken up at San Pedro, CA. in 1937.       More Images......

Commodore
 "Straights of Juan De Fuca"
COMMODORE Schooner – rigged and Reefed in the Straights of Juan De Fuca.  Such vessels were first used by the Dutch in the 16th or 17th century. Originally schooners were gaff-rigged. But modern schooners may be Bermuda-rigged. Schooners were further developed in North America from the early 18th century, and were more widely used in the United States than in any other country.    More Images.....
